As a dominant provider of enterprise solutions and a cloud leader — its Azure Cloud is second only to AWS — Microsoft is investing heavily in AI. For example, it has significantly expanded its relationship with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

Leveraging its massive supercomputing platform, its goal is to enable customers to build out AI applications on a global scale. It’s likely that Microsoft will be the leading provider of AI solutions to the enterprise.

Founded by childhood friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen on 4th April 1975, it became one of the most successful and dominating companies in the technology space. Its Windows Operating System has a market share of more than 75% in the PC segment. With solid fundamentals, it is the 2nd company, only after Apple to achieve a $2 trillion milestone in market capitalisation. Microsoft is currently operating in software development, cloud computing, social network, consumer electronics, computer hardware, etc.

The scale of operations that Microsoft administers is evident by its more than 120 subsidiaries that include LinkedIn Corporation, Xbox Game Studios, MSN Autos, Hotmail, and many such mergers and acquisitions. In 2018, Microsoft became the most valuable publicly-traded company globally, reclaiming the position that it lost to Apple in 2010. It was the third company to reach the trillion-dollar market capitalization after Apple and Amazon.

Currently, its leadership roles are executed by Satya Nadella, holding the position as CEO of the company, with John W. Thompson being the Chairperson. Microsoft is traded under the ticker symbol MSFT.

It is considered one of the Big Five American information technology companies, alongside Alphabet (parent company of Google), Amazon, Apple, and Meta (parent company of Facebook).
